This piece was created in response to the episode, Lotus Eaters set on and around Westland Row, and is an image of a confessional curtain in St Andrew’s Church. Throughout the episode we witness Bloom mentally indulge in a number of the cardinal sins including Lust (“Watch! Watch! Silk flash rich stockings white. Watch!”), Envy and Pride. Much has changed of this area of Dublin, but not “All Hallows” (St. Andrew’s Church) where “[t]he cold smell of sacred stone called him”, and Bloom enters the church during the liturgy of the Eucharist and stays for the remainder of the Mass. The title of the piece is derived from both Bloom’s thoughts during this episode and the contents of the letter he has received from Martha -
“Remember if you do not I will punish you. So now you know what I will do to you, you naughty boy, if you do not write.”
“Confession. Everyone wants to. Then I will tell you all. Penance. Punish me, please.”
