Matthew Gammon is a self-taught visual artist based in Boyle, County Roscommon. His practice is defined by a contemplative, mastery of the polymer photogravure printmaking technique, a medium he employs to interrogate the ontological boundaries between the mundane and the sublime. As a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a member of Graphic Studio Dublin, he utilises this medium’s deep tonal range where form and shadow converge, which allows him to elevate everyday subjects into sophisticated, tactile icons.

Informed by a MA in Psychoanalytic Studies and a BA in Politics & Scholastic Philosophy, Gammon’s work functions as a meditation on the nature of perception. He seeks to uncover a haunting, essential beauty within the everyday and the overlooked, positing that elegance is often found in the quiet resilience of the neglected. This philosophical inquiry is most notably realized in his current project, The Feather Assembly, where the silhouettes of the crow family - primarily captured across North-West Ireland - become icons of a persistent, sculptural grace.

A seven-time exhibitor at the Royal Ulster Academy (RUA) Annual Exhibition, this year was his third time exhibiting in the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) Annual Exhibition. His work has also been exhibited by the Royal Photographic Society, the Royal Society of Printmakers (RE), the Center for Photographic Art (USA); and is held in major public collections, including the OPW State Art Collection, the National Library of Ireland, and the British Library.
